Since these CD-ROM questions seem to be poping up more and more, I think
I'll write a short FAQ on using the GUS with a CD-ROM. But before I
start, is there anything like this already out there or in the works?

I don't know of places to buy cables, but I made one myself for a Mitsumi
(easy) and a Chinon (harder, but not to hard). Send me e-mail with
specific information and I'll see if I can help.

If the drive is connected to the CD audio-in pins, just make sure the
output is enabled (ultrinit -o). If your CD-ROM is going into the
line-in, enable line-in and output (ultrinit -o -l). If you are exiting
from Windows, you'll need to reset these even if they were set before
going into Windows (unless the new drivers fixed that.)

Has anyone else noticed that archive.epas.utoronto.ca is very slow? Or
could this be a local problem for me? If it is epas, who do I contact to
complain (well, I should be glad epas is there at all, but still, it used to
be so much faster).

I haven't seen anything about the GUS CD2 pinouts, but the standard
3-pin connector for CD audio cables these days is left - ground - right.

First off, make sure you are using the correct driver in Power Chords. Select
'Options' then 'MIDI'. Select the "UltraSound MIDI Synth" driver for the
Output Device. Click OK.
*** For anyone whose had TROUBLE with POWER CHORDS ie. Sounds Missing: ***
--> Switch to 8 bit patches from 16 bit. <--
Here is some background info on this, and instructions on how to make the
change.
The Gravis UltraSound card stores instrument patches in its on-board RAM.
Boards are now being shipped with 256K RAM.
Power Chords communicates with the Windows UltraSound driver to tell it which
patch sounds to load.
When in interactive mode (ie. a song is not playing), Power Chords loads the
drum sounds first, then the melodic patches for the current bass and melody
parts in the Rhythm Editor, as well as the patch for the on-screen instrument.
When a song is to be played, these patches are removed, and the patches needed
to play the song are loaded.
If you find that the drum parts are sounding and not the instrument then you
are running out of patch memory on the UltraSound board. Similarly, you may
find that some parts in a song play and the drums play, but other parts do
not.
You can check to see how much patch memory is left selecting 'Patch Memory
Left' from the 'Help' menu item on the main Power Chords menu. If it says you
are down to less than 30,000 or 40,000 bytes, then you have probably run out
of patch memory on the UltraSound board.
There are two things that you can do to remedy this situation. You can
increase the RAM on the UltraSound board, or you can change modes from 16 bit
to 8 bit instrument patch usage to halve the size of the instrument patches as
loaded into RAM.
Increasing the RAM on the UltraSound board: You can purchase a memory upgrade
option from Advanced Gravis, or you can buy the chips yourself from various
sources. According to the GUS digest on Internet, you need 256x4 DRAM chips,
with speeds of 80ns or better. Please contact Advanced Gravis for more
information on this.
Changing from 16 bit to 8 bit patches:
Double click on the 'Control Panel' in the 'Main' Windows Program Manager
group. Then double click on the 'Drivers' icon.
Find the UltraSound driver in the list of installed drivers and click once on
it to highlight it. Now click on the button marked 'Setup' to the right of the
driver list. In the UltraSound driver setup dialog, select the 'Conserve
Memory' option in the lower left corner. Click 'OK' to save your changes. This
should help substantially. There is some sound degradation with this option,
but it is not as great as one might think.
David, if you still can't get things working, feel free to e-mail me directly.
Also, there is a Gus Music digest you can subscribe to which would probably be
a better place for Power Chords queries.

Subject: Re: Possible Solution for FS5 Problems
For those with Microsoft's new Flight Simulator 5.0 ...
The BAO (Bruce Artwick Organization) has posted a
sound/joystick patch file called FS5PATCH.ZIP to
the flight simulator directory at ftp.iup.edu
I installed this when I first found it in December.
My impression was that it improved things quite a bit
(but it's been weeks since I've had time to play...).
Note that I have NOT yet tried the patch with the latest
version of SBOS. That site appeared to be unreachable
just before I wrote this. I will fetch the file from home
and have it available to anyone who wants a copy...let me know.
If there's enough [read that as _too much_ :)] interest, I may
upload it to EPAS.
On a related note, the descriptive message from BAO on this patch
emphasizes the NEED of FS5 for EMS! It is important to consult
the inside back cover of the manual on this. Finally, there is
another interesting file at the IUP site that converts the digital
display of the nondirectional beacon radio into a frame-rate counter!
Hoping to see you in the clouds (at a safe distance)...
Thomas

If you have only 256k on your GUS, then you need to turn on the conserve
memory option for Powerchords to work properly.

Somebody posted a GUS for sale ($100, with 1 meg DRAM), and I lost his
address. If you're still out there, guy, I _want_ that card! That goes for
anyone else with a similar offer. I'm lookin' for a GUS.
Not like this isn't absolutely the _wrong_ place to look for GUSes for
sale! Thanks, guys.

If someone has got Subwar working, could they let me know what they used
as all I get when I use SBOS or Megaem is an internal stack overflow,
wherupon the PC locks up, and it's driving me nuts trying to get the
thing working.

Subject: windows question again
As usual no one paid any attention to my question. I will ask it once more.
Is there any way to change the default MIDI and .WAV volumes with the new
Windows drivers? In previous versions there was an area in the Setup
dialog where you could adjust these. This is gone now, and it always
defaults to about 3/4 from the top, requiring me to load up the stupid
mixer every time and manually change this to be able to even hear the .WAV
sounds.
Certainly by now someone else has noticed this problem with the new
Windows drivers (the ones included in the .zip with Patch Maker Lite) and
can offer some insight.
At the least I would appreciate some sort of reply.
